1. Schoology
Schoology strikes a good balance between flexibility and ease of use. It offers a variety of question types, from true/false to essay, and its assignment scheduling automatically populates the class calendar. It also includes a built-in attendance tracker that marks students as present by default, saving instructors time.
The main limitation is a 512 MB file size cap. Also, Schoology Basic was discontinued on October 1, 2023, so new users can no longer sign up for its free plan.

2. Chamilo
Chamilo is a Belgian open-source LMS that launched in 2010. The interface hasn't been updated much in over a decade, but it gets the core job done. You can create courses, embed YouTube and Vimeo videos, and use a ChatGPT-powered AI plugin to generate test questions automatically.
The biggest drawback is a lack of documentation and an outdated UI. Grading on best attempt was only added in v1.11.18 in 2023.

3. Moodle
Moodle is one of the most widely used open-source LMS platforms. It has a user-friendly interface, organizes courses through categories, and supports customizable blocks and themes. The v4.4 update introduced color-coded icons for accessibility.
Moodle supports over 100 languages, has 2,000+ plugins, and comes with pre-loaded role permissions, SSO, and email verification. If you’ve got the technical resources to host and maintain it, Moodle’s hard to beat for flexibility.

4. Sakai
Sakai brings flexibility to individual and group assignments, with multiple ways for learners to submit their work. The options include inline responses, attachments, videos, offline submissions, and LTI tools. It also offers randomized questions from question pools and automated grading options.
The platform also features BigBlueButton for live conferencing and supports anonymous peer evaluation for collaborative learning.

5. Canvas
Canvas is the most popular open-source learning platform. Canvas’ mobile support is strong, with separate apps for teachers and students on iOS and Android. The main limitation is that submission types are restricted to text, URLs, media, and files.

6. TalentLMS
TalentLMS offers a free tier, but it caps at 5 users and 10 courses. Within those limits, you’ll get most core features, including question types, group enrollment via keys, certificate generation, and SSO through Okta, Google, Azure, and OneLogin.
Gamification features like badges, points, and leaderboards are available on the free tier. Automations, however, require the Pro plan.

7. Open edX
Open edX offers a free plan for up to 50 users. Beyond that, you'll need either paid cloud hosting or the technical chops to self-host with Docker. You can edit the source code for CSS and JavaScript customization, and content embedded via iFrame auto-updates when the source changes.
Simple problem types are mobile-ready, but some advanced options require proficiency in JavaScript or Python.

8. ILIAS
ILIAS is the oldest LMS on this list; it was first released in 1998. It’s primarily used by German-speaking higher education institutions and is fully open source. The UI is more intuitive than Chamilo’s but less modern than Canvas or TalentLMS, and course creation takes a few more clicks than you’d expect.
The user handbook is only available in German, but community support is available through forums and Discord.
